This week at OCKC

We train on Mondays and Thursdays at the Swan School, Marston Ferry Road, Oxford OX2 7WP. There is a car park and ample bike parking. The sports hall is to the right at the end of the car park.

Beginners are welcome at our Club Training on Thursdays, 6.30-8pm. We usually go to The Victoria Arms in Marston afterwards.

In the winter Team Training is on Mondays at 6.30-8pm for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th teams, and 8pm-9.30pm for our 1sts and 2nds. In the summer training is only Thursdays and is for the full club. No training on Bank Holidays.

Beginners and new players are welcome but please get in touch so we can make sure you have up to date information.

Training is usually indoors (grippy trainers required), although we sometimes go outside during the summer (astroturf or moulded boots recommended). We also recommend bringing a bottle of water.

LOOOAAADDSSS of OCKC games this weekend....

....including THE BIG ONE first up, as the 2️⃣s and 3️⃣s duke it out in the big OKA Div 1 clash at Swan School on Saturday afternoon! It's all to play for, with both sides level on points, with the 3s having played a game fewer, so make sure you get on down to watch the game in person (mainly because if you don’t, you could be waiting 3-4 business days to watch the match on YouTube if certain people's wifi/upload speeds are anything to go by!) 👀

On Sunday, the 1️⃣s have an early start as they head up the M40 for their Promo league match against Birmingham City 1, looking to extend their six game winning streak!

Having warmed up nicely with the derby on Saturday, the 3️⃣s then play their second game of the weekend, once again travelling to "South Reading", this time to face Farnborough Jets 2, who sit 3rd in OKA Div 1 having only lost once this season.

After last weekend's defeat to Isis 2, City 5️⃣ will be hoping to get revenge on Isis 1 in the first game of the day at Greyfriars in the OKA Div 2 North match up. A win for the 5s would catapult them back into 2nd in the table, but it won't be an easy game against the a-yet-unbeaten league leaders!

The 1️⃣s travelled to play the newbies to the WRL in the shape of Guildford Thunder 1, and after a closely fought first half, ultimately the greater experience at this level from the away team proved to be the decider, as City 1 ran away 28-10 winners.
Alf Timney with another 🙄 MVP award, Joe Lever claiming 🦊MVP (with both also scoring 4 each), with Dan also helping himself to 4, and last but certainly not least, Niall smashing in 7 to take his OCKC career goals total past the 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ mark! Congrats Niall!

Both the 3️⃣s and 4️⃣s were on the road to face Reading Rooks 1, with City 3 up first, with a few wondering how they'd fill the goalscoring/foghorn-at-the-post void left by Timmy Mac being away with the 1s? Turns out, they'd manage just fine, with Heafford banging in 6 and scooping both MVP awards. Coaching coordinator Nick helped himself to 3, whilst the bragging rights in the Dickinson/Yates household went to the latter as Amy helped herself to a hat-trick but Tim went one better with four.

The 4️⃣s were up next, and despite a raft of absentees, they still gave an excellent account of themselves, with a closely fought game ending with the home side edging out the 4s by the odd goal. John and Tim claimed a hat-trick each, with the latter also scooping the opposition voted MVP award, whilst Lucy bagged 🦊 MVP.

Earlier on in the day, the 5️⃣s face Oxford Isis 2 at Greyfriars, with only 7 players available due to injury, absentees and all other teams playing away matches. Despite a valiant effort by all (and who *really* has any idea how to play with (or against for that matter) seven anyway?!) a strong Isis side came out 11-3 winners. Despite being the only girl in her division, Tegan still miraculously managed to top score AND win BOTH MVP awards! 🤩

Four OCKC teams in action this Sunday, as the 2s have another weekend off.

First up it's the 1️⃣s who are away at Guildford Thunder 1 in the Western Regional League, looking to continue their 5 game winning streak against the newly promoted team. City 1 find themselves in 3rd place in the WRL whilst their opponents are still without a point in 8th place. A win this weekend would lift City 1 up to 2nd in the table, behind Cardiff City 1 on goal difference.

City 5️⃣ return to league action as they play Oxford Isis 2 in the only OCKC game at Greyfriars this weekend, where a win for the 5s would move them up to 2nd in the OKA Div 2 North standings.

Both City 3️⃣ and City 4️⃣ are on their travels to face Reading Rooks 1 in OKA Division 1. With Oxford Uni 1 not playing this weekend, a win for the 3s could see them leapfrog them into 5th place in the table and extend their winning streak to 3 games.

A win for the 4s against the same opponent would see them arrest a three game losing run and put a bit of daylight between the two teams in the league table.

Just the one league game for OCKC teams this weekend, albeit a MASSIVE one, as the 4s took on the 3s at Greyfriars on Sunday afternoon.

In what was a thoroughly engaging contest, competitive right until the end, ultimately the 3s prevailed to come out 16-10 victors!

Shout outs to all the MVPs (Amy and James H for the 3s, Ali, Peter and Lucy for the 4s), and some stellar shooting on display, most notably from Ali and Peter (both bagging hat-tricks), and Timmy Mac for helping himself to two.... hat-tricks.

In the early game at Greyfriars, City 5 (and friends) faced Didcot 1 in a friendly contest, with the opposition from the South eventually coming out on top by a score of 13-12. Once again, check out 🦊 📰 for the low down on this game as well!

City 5 kick off Sunday's proceedings with a friendly match against Didcot 1, due to a number of absentees meaning the 5s are unable to field a full team. Seems like City 5s charge up the OKA Div 2 North table will have to continue another week!

And straight after that we have the second OCKC derby match of the season, as City 4 take on City 3. A win for the 3s would lift them off the foot of the table and overtake the 4s, whilst a win for City 4 would help to cement their current 6th place position in OKA Div 1.

Another exciting weekend of matches!

First off, on Saturday the 1s played a Exeter Uni 1 side much changed from last year, and with a few absentees to compound the issue, followed by a Sunday match up against WRL newbies Exeter City 1.
I won't steal any thunder away from the excellent match reports (written by people who were actually there!) which you can catch in the next edition of 🦊 📰 , but safe to say the 1s had an absolute blinder of a weekend, including scoring what I *believe* is the highest number of goals ever scored by an OCKC team in a single match (cue someone almost instantly correcting me).

The weekend also saw Dan Landragan hit 400 career goals for OCKC, so a massive congratulations for what is a mightily impressive feat!

Back in Oxford, City 4 were first up at Greyfriars on Sunday, facing a strong looking Farnborough Jets 2 side features more than a few familiar faces. Despite resilient defensive work throughout the 4s squad keeping the contest a competitive one, ultimately the quality and experience of the visitors shone through as they came away victorious. Special mention to Ali who excelled with a hat-trick and winning both MVP nominations as well!

City 2 finished off the OCKC matches this weekend with a excellent 20-13 victory over Oxford Uni 1 missing a few key players. A strong start by the home team saw them motor into a 5-1 lead after only 7 mintes, but a dogged Uni side reined us back in to narrow the score to 8-6 at half time. A quickfire goal at the start of the second half for Uni brought to score to within 1 and threatened to give the 2s the jitters, but that was the closest they got as City 2 managed the second half well to emerge with the win. The game featured two buzzer beater goals, a goal from a lovely over ball (definitely wasn’t a shot Kyle), and 5 hattricks from the home team, Kyle winning an MVP award in consecutive weeks, and Rich bagging 🦊 MVP the round out and excellent weekend of korf!

Next up for the 1s it's a weekend away in Exeter for a WRL double header against Uni and City respectively. First up, on Saturday, it's an Exeter Uni 1 team with a much changed squad in comparison to last season, where City 1 fell to defeats both home and away. Exeter City 1 welcome City 1 on Sunday afternoon, where victory for the visitors would see them draw level on points with the hosts, albeit they'll remain in fourth in the WRL table on goal difference (unless they win by like a billionty goals!)

City 4 are the OCKC team first up on Sunday's fixtures list at Greyfriars as they face somewhat of an unknown quantity in Farnborough 2, with both teams having been promoted from OKA Div 2 North and South respectively at the end of last season. City 4's opponents will no doubt come out fighting in an effort to lift themselves off the bottom of the OKA Div 1 table so the 4s will have to have their game faces on from the first whistle!

City 2 round off the weekend hoping for a bounce back performance against Oxford Uni 1 after defeat to Abingdon 1 last weekend. The 2s currently lie 4th in the table, 4 points off their opponents, with the hope that last season's unbeaten form (a win and a draw) against Uni 1 continues and gets us back on track!

The 1s kicked off this weekend with a thoroughly deserved Promo League victory over Sheffield City 1 at Wheatley, where some clinical shooting meant they motored into a convincing 15-5 half time lead. It was a case of first half good, second half not so good, as the home side took their foot off the gas somewhat, losing the second half but still coming out comfortable winners on the day by a score of 20-11.

The game also saw a season debut after injury from James Morgan and Alice Lomas scoring her first goal for OCKC!

City 3 met Southampton 1 hoping to get their first points on the board this season, and that's exactly what they did! Despite some initial struggles in attack in the first half, they emerged 17-16 victors after a strong second half performance with stellar shooting displays from MVPs Timmy Mac (6 goals) and Nick Duxbury (5, maybe you should start on the bench more often?🤔🤣).

The 5s were in action next versus Abingdon 3. The most confusing match form I've ever seen (and that includes some of those from City 1 last year!) prevents me from divining too much about this game, but safe to say the 5s smashed it again, with a tremendous 16-10 win, with James Maltês grabbing a hat-trick and Peter Curtis two (hat-tricks) and bagging opposition voted MVP. Shout out to Chris Burgess for scoring his first goal for OCKC in his debut season of korf, and scooping Foxy MVP too!

Alas City 2 couldn't make it a clean sweep for the weekend unfortunately, seccumbing to a well-drilled Abingdon 1 side. Once again it was a case of strong defence by the 2s, but unable to convert the numerous chances they created, with hopes of a bounce back performance against Oxford Uni 1 next on the fixture list.

MVPs for this game were Claire and Kyle, the latter winning his first MVP award at OCKC after his impact off the bench.

Four OCKC games this weekend!

City 3 kick off the weekend as they travel down the A34 to face Southampton 1 for only their second game this season, looking to get their first points on the board in OKA Division 1.

Back in Oxfordshire, the 5s will hope that they can bag all 4 points against Abingdon 3 at Greyfriars, and if results go their way, they could end the weekend top of OKA Division 2 North!

City 1 meanwhile match up against Sheffield City 1 at Park Sports Centre in Wheatley for a Promo League clash, hoping to emulate the result last time they welcomed the visitors to Oxford, where the home side managed a 22-18 victory (including 5 goal hauls for both Becca Brennan and James Morgan).

The final OCKC match of the weekend sees 2nd play 3rd in OKA Division 1, as City 2 play Abingdon 1. A clear win for the 2s would see them leapfrog their opponents to remain hot on the coat-tails of early season pace-setters Basingstoke 1.

City 2 came away victorious against City 4 in the club's first derby of the season.

Match report by James Maltês

A fast-paced, and often frenetic, first half gave us an exciting but low-scoring start. Claire opened the scoring within a minute of the starting whistle, but no second goal following until almost 9 minutes later, with Oli scoring a running in shot, fed by Ruth.

The introduction of double MVP winner Emily Young saw City 2 upping their tempo as well as their goal tally. The wondersub scoring 3 within minutes of her coming on.
The second half opened with the same first half tenacity on display by both teams. City 4 showed much more fluidity in their passing in the opening salvos of this half, but were initially unable to convert those moves into goals. City 2 began the scoring, netting 4 without reply, until Lizzy got a much-deserved goal from a penalty.
This half continued in much the same way as the first, with City 4, despite some positive play, unable to match a City 2 team playing their best korfball so far this season. A well earned 19-7 victory for the 2s, and a fun display for all the courtside neutrals.

Three OCKC teams in action this weekend and three wins (and 7 hattricks!)

City 2 secured their first win of the season at the second time of asking as they emerged victorious from a low scoring affair with Reading Rooks 1 by a score of 11-5. Ruth and Alice bagged a hattrick each, with a staunch defensive display in the second half from one division in particular yielding both MVP awards (Opposition voted for Peter, 🦊 for Rich). And most importantly, baked goods were enjoyed by all, and the Awespoon has been located, having also seemingly given birth to a mini awespoon!

City 4 then showed City 2 how to put the yellow and blue ball in the yellow hoop thing by beating the same opponent by a more convincing margin of 17-9, and chalking up their first win of the season!
More hattricks in this game, this time from Jack, John and Ali, with Anthony "Bubb" Bubb getting the oppposition voted MVP and Lucy getting 🦊 .

It was City 5's turn to round out the weekend, and they did it in style getting back to winning ways against Oxford Uni 2, ultimately coming out 9-8 victors. Rich Matthews bagged a hattrick with LJ matching that and also taking away both MVP awards ⭐️ ⭐️ . This match also saw the return from injury of two committee members, with both Emma Livett and James Maltês scoring on their season debuts!

This weekend's results mean that City 4 climb up to 4th in the OKA Div 1 Table on 6 points from 4 games, City 2 get their first points on the board with 4pts from 2 games as they sit in 6th place, with City 3 hoping to kick start their season and move off the bottom of the table next weekend away at Southampton, having only played one game so far this season. Thursday evening sees our first OCKC derby match of the season as the 2s take on the 4s with the winner of that match moving up to 3rd in the standings ahead of the rest of next weekend's fixtures!

City 5 currently sit 2nd in OKA Div 2 North table, with 9 points from 3 games and will hope to continue rising up the league with next weekend's match against Abingdon 3.

And just like that, it's nearly the weekend again and another round of korfball fixtures.

Three OCKC teams in action this weekend, with the 1s and 3s having a rest, and the 5s returning after a week off due to last weekend's cancelled fixture.

The 2s are first up again this weekend where they take on somewhat of an unknown quantity in Reading Rooks 1, who were promoted from OKA Division 2 South at the end of last season. The visitors will be fresh from getting their first points on the board last weekend after securing all the points against Southampton 1. Meanwhile City 2 will be looking to bounce back after last weekend's disappointing loss to Basingstoke.

Reading Rooks have a break in between their game with the 2s and their next match, where their opponents are City 4, looking to secure their first win of the season to move them up the OKA Division 1 table.

And then last but most certainly not least, City 5 welcome Oxford Uni 2, hoping to secure all four points to add to the five already secured this season, as they currently sit 3rd in the OKA Division 2 North table.

Any and all support encouraged and gratefully received as always, so grab your camping chairs and a warm coat (you know how cold 🥶 it can get in Greyfriars!)

City 1 emerged from the weekend victorious after a

City 1 emerged from the weekend victorious after a 24-18 home win against @raptorskorfball 1 making that back to back wins, with a broad spread of goals throughout the team. Calum was back on the MVP trail scoring 5 and securing the opposition voted award, with Becca nabbing Foxy MVP and 5 goals as well. Other notable scoring numbers for Alf with 6 and Joe with 4!

City 2 kicked off their season with a stern test against the form team in OKA Div 1, @basingstokebullskorfball 1. Fresh from 2 wins from 2, they opened up a healthy lead in this contest that our 2s could never really close. A Dolly Parton-esque 9 to 5 half time scoreline in favour of the visitors meant a rousing 2nd half was required. Despite solid defence throughout from the 2s, ultimately shooting accuracy was the decider here, with both sides posting similar number of shots taken, but the 2s unfortunately on the wrong end of a 19-12 final score. MVPs for Abbie (opposition) and Ian (🦊), but in an opening game with a number of encouraging signs for the rest of the season, the real concern on everyone's mind was.... where had the awe🥄 disappeared to!? Maybe the prospect of a complete absence of post-game baked goods ❌🧁(with all dietary requirements kindly taken into consideration 🙏) was to blame for our profligacy on Sunday afternoon!?

City 3 also faced a tough opening fixture against @oxfordunikorfball 1, as ever, sporting a number of new faces in their starting line up. A high scoring fixture ultimately ended with a 22-16 victory in favour of Uni, despite a sterling effort from our 3s throughout the whole team and a seemingly new-found bromance between Timmy and Connor conjuring up 9 goals and both MVP awards between them!

City 4 looked to build on their encouraging start to the season with bonus points secured in both of their previous fixtures highlighting just how narrow the margin of defeat can be! As Basingstoke had demonstrated earlier on against our 2s, a uphill battle awaited our 4s, and despite some brilliant performances, no more so than Ashley (topscoring with 3, and winning both MVP awards), the team from Hampshire ensured they took home all the points with two victories from two!

(completely ruining my fixtures post format!)

City 1 kick off the weekend with a home game (what's one of those!?), hosting @raptorskorfball 1 in the Western Regional League clash on Saturday afternoon at Swan School Oxford. The last time these teams faced each other it ended in a 12-12 stalemate, so City 1 will be hoping to go one better after a morale boosting win last weekend against Farnborough Jets.

And then on the Sunday we have a bumper crop of @oxfordshirekorfball League games at Greyfriars in Oxford, with the 2s and 3s finally kicking off their season.

First up, the 2s welcome @basingstokebullskorfball 1 in what is sure to be a tense game. Last season these two sides couldn't be separated on the court, with both games ending in a draw. Basingstoke have set the early pace, winning both their games so far this season to sit atop the OKA Division 1 table.

Later on in the day, Basingstoke 1 will also play our 4s, who after a couple of very encouraging games, will be hoping to secure their first victory of the season.

And sandwiched in between those two games, our 3s start their season in earnest, as they face @oxfordunikorfball 1. Last season our 3s won their first game against Uni with the second ending in a 19-19 draw.

Despite City 1 allowing things to get a little too

Despite City 1 allowing things to get a little too interesting in the closing minutes of their Western Regional League game with @farnborough.jets.korfball 1, they managed to hold out for a 17-16 victory on the road, and a first win of the season! City 1 were fast out of the starting blocks and raced into a 5-1 lead before the opposition called a time out in an effort to calm everything down and refocus. Order was restored with a quick salvo of scores of their own, bringing the half time scores to 8-6 in favour of the visitors.

With some excellent play on show from both sides throughout, the game ebbed and flowed, but ntering the last few minutes of the game, the pressure appeared to be getting to City 1 as the hosts brought the score back to within one score, but ultimately the victory for the 1s was richly deserved.

Shout outs for Alf for scoring 5 and scooping both MVP awards, Niall and Becca for scoring 4 a piece (including 50% shot accuracy for the latter!) and Joe for a tremendous impact off the bench.

City 4 had an at times somewhat spicy encounter with @southamptonspartans 1 at Greyfriars, with some stellar shooting from Claire (5 goals), John and Peter (4 each) and Ali and Jack (both 3), but despite another battling performance, they couldn't quite secure the win, ending with a 23-20 loss. The 4s continue to show that although the results of their first two games haven't got the way they planned, they're in no way overawed by the step up to OKA Division 1, with their first win of the season surely just round the corner.

And the 5s, repleat with a number of debutants, also ran @oxfordisiskorf 1 close, ultimately losing out by a score of 14-12. Debut OCKC appearances from Laura and Dan R, the latter deciding that despite being a complete newbie to the sport, it's not actually that hard to play, helping himself to a ridiculous 4 goal haul and both MVP awards in the process.
In a brief post match interview, Dan broke down his approach to his newly adopted sport, insisting korfball isn't all that complex after all, and simply a case of "...just shoot the thing in the hoop innit??".
